ABOUT THE PLACEMcKinney Roughs is a huge LCRA park which is half way between the Airport and Bastrop. They've spent a lot of money building a really nice visitor's center, and lots of other nice construction is still under way. There are many, many miles of very good hiking in this park, and there is access to the Colorado River. There are some steep parts on the trail, so this is a more challening hike than most parks in the Austin area. McKinney Roughs also appears to be very popular with equestrians since there are lots of people on horses there doing the trails. The park hosts several special events during the year, and I would refer you to their official web site for the best information: http://www.lcra.org/lands/roughs
HOW TO GET THERETake 71 East past Bergstrom Airport. It's quite a way past the Airport, but if you get to Bastrop you've gone too far. The park entrance is on the North side of 71, and there is a brown highway Park sign a few hundred meters before the turn.
