The Greenstone Guide to Austin & The Hil Country

FREDERICKSBURG

ABOUT THE PLACE

Fredericksburg is one of the best, if not the best, tourist towns in Texas. It has great food, great shopping, and lots of events, especially in early fall. Main Street in Fredericksburg is a long road with shopping and restaurants as far as the eye can see, and the buildings are all old 1880's German pioneer structures with a very historical feel. This is one of the more romantic settings in Texas and there are a bounty of Bed & Breakfast Inns all over town and in surrounding areas. There is so much to see and do in this city that it is hard to describe it all here, so I will recommend that you visit the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce web site since they have detailed information about everything in that city.

However, I will make a few special recommendations:

  • • Both the Admiral Nimitz Museum and the National Museum of the Pacific War are excellent and worth the price of admission.

  • • It goes without saying that there is a lot of excellent shopping in Fredericksburg!

  • • It also goes without saying that there is a lot of excellent German dining here too. If you come to Fredericksburg and eat anything but German food then you should really be ashamed of yourself. The Fredericksburg Brewery is excellent, and they have great beer and a mix of German and other types of food. The Auslander, which is across the street from the Nimitz, is very good too.

    • Just down the road is Encanted Rock State Park - one of the best parks in Texas.

HOW TO GET THERE

Just get onto 290 and keep driving and following the signs to Fredericksburg until you get there. When you enter the city, 290 becomes Main Street so park wherever you can. It takes about 70-90 minutes to get there from Austin.
