The Greenstone Guide to Austin & The Hil Country

TEXAS STATE CAPITOL

ABOUT THE PLACE

The Texas State Capitol building is a must-see for anyone coming to Austin. It's much more impressive on the inside than you would think. The rotunda in the middle is spectacular - stand in the center and look up - it'll make you dizzy! Be sure to check out the basement since there are often exhibits hidden down there. Admission is free, but they might search your bags as you enter. Just walk on up to the front steps, open the door, and come on in! There is also a separate Visitor's Center next to the capitol where you can buy Texas stuff and see a museum with other historical artifacts.

HOW TO GET THERE

Look for the dome and head towards it! If that fails, get on Congress and head towards it. There is almost always parking on the west side of the capitol. There is a row of parking spots with meters, and I've never not been able to get a spot there.
