The Greenstone Guide to Fun in Austin

CAMPING

Camping in Texas is a little different than in most states because almost all of the land in Texas is privately owned. Therefore, camping is generally limited to State and National Parks. The result is that car camping is generally the way to go. There are places that you can backpack, but most of the time you'll be car-camping. Many state parks have excellent car camping spots.

This list includes camping spots well outside of Austin or the Hill Country because some of the best camping is actually far north or far west in the moutain and canyon areas of the state.

BALMORHEA STATE PARK

Swim in a crystal clear spring in the desert.

BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK

This park is bigger than some states!

BIG BEND RANCH STATE PARK

The ultimate hideaway in West Texas.
