The Greenstone Guide to Austin & The Hil Country

BOERNE

Boerne, TX is a really nice little town with lots to see and do. It reminds me a lot of Fredericksburg in that it is an old German settlement with a Main Street that has a good variety of antique and art shops. Similarly, it is nearby to a state park and other places of interest. Here are a few points of interest that I've found in my visits there:

CAVE WITHOUT A NAME

This is a nice show cave that has public tours. It is a really beautiful cave, but not particularly large - at least the part that the tours go to. I have some 3D pictures that I took of the cave on my Panomundo site.

YE KENDALL INN

This is a great place to stay in Boerne. Historic building, and out in back there is a courtyard where they have 1880's German pioneer cabins that were moved there from Fredericksburg (that's my understanding of it). I stayed in one and it was really nice. Here is a picture of it:

THE CREEK RESTAURANT

This was probably the best dining experience I've ever had for less than $20. This is gourmet dining in a gourmet atmosphere and service, but the prices of the food are literally half of what you would expect to pay! The food is superb, the service is superb, the scenery is superb, and the prices are like something out of the 70's. They could easily charge 50% more for everything and nobody would flinch. The restaurant is somewhat hidden at the intersection fo Main St. (Haupstrasse) and the Cibolo Creek. There are signs there, and the restaurant is large, so you'll see it if you keep an eye out for it.

CAROUSEL ANTIQUES & PICKLES

Whenever I am in Boerne I always make s stop here to pick up a jar or two of their pickles. The sign out from says they're the best pickles in the world, and I would agree! They're delicious! The antique store itself specializes in antique hardware such as old hammers, and things. Pretty neat stuff in there, but the pickles are the reason to go.

CIBOLO NATURE PRESERVE

Just a few miles out of town. I've only stopped there on the way back to Austin to get some information, but I haven't actually spent time there to see how it is. They have a pretty long nature trail and such. Check out their site for more info.

GUADALUPER RIVER STATE PARK

This nice state park is only about 15 miles from Boerne. It is a really nice stretch of river where you can swim.

HILL COUNTRY STATE NATURAL AREA

Some of the best hiking in the Hill Country, and it's a very short drive from Boerne to Bandera where this park is.

HOW TO GET THERE

This is actually a bit complicated, and I rely on my car's nav system to get me there because there are a lot of turns. Essentially, however, you take 290 past Dripping Springs and then take the Henly cutoff toward Blanco and eventually to 281. Take 281 south thru Spring Branch and then turn west on 46, and that should take you into Boerne.
